Go for red this Christmas with Jenny's winter creation
In this second part, Jenny explores a hanging floral design with red as the key color. Starting with reflections from past works, she focuses on red, inspired by holly berries and winter moments. The structure is created with lightweight chicken wire, with Ilex berries as the base, followed by inverted amaryllis, hydrangea, and more. The result is a floating, asymmetrical composition capturing the warmth of Christmas in a modern design.
Cherry Christmas
Step 1 – InspirationFor Jenny, the color red feels like the moment when the first Christmas music starts to play. The color of the berries you see on a winter walk. The color that tells you this moment matters.
Step 2 – The ConstructionShe shapes chicken wire into a loose tube, forming the base structure of her creation.
Step 3 – The BaseThe construction is securely attached to ceiling wires. By leaving some space between the wire and the ceiling, flowers can be inserted both from above and below.
Step 4 – Time for BerriesThe red Ilex berries take center stage in this creation. They are long-lasting, even without water.
Step 5 – Hold TightEach flower is fastened with thin wire to keep them firmly in place.
Step 6 – TextureSlowly, the structure fills with a red glow of Ilex berries. The protruding branches add extra volume and texture.
Step 7 – AsymmetryJenny ensures the lower part is heavier, creating an asymmetrical teardrop shape. The negative space at the top makes the red stand out even more.
Step 8 – Upside-Down AmaryllisJenny hangs the Amaryllis ‘Britney’ upside down in the arrangement. Thanks to the hollow stem, each flower becomes a natural water tube.
Step 9 – BalanceBy varying the lengths of the Amaryllis stems, she creates balance, not symmetry.
Step 10 – TubesGlass tubes are added to the design. Both the tubes and the Amaryllis stems are filled with water. Note: water adds extra weight, so keep that in mind during construction.
Step 11 – An Abundance of FlowersNow other flowers are added, such as Hydrangea Magical Dark Ruby, Helleborus Mammoth Red, Vanda Sunanda Lava, Ranunculus Elegance Red, Eustoma Rosanne Terracotta, Gloriosa Rothschildiana, Scabiosa Dark Cherry Scoop and Talinum Long John.
Shades of cherry red, burgundy, raspberry, and coral combine into a layered red glow. Each flower has its own function.
Step 12 – The Finishing TouchThe arrangement is filled with warm red tones and rich textures. Attached to a floating structure of chicken wire and thread, it forms an airy yet powerful composition.
