The creative world of floral designer Max van de Sluis

Tuesday 09 June 2026

Max was Dutch Champion Floral Artist from 1998 to 2002. He is known for his unique style, where tradition and modern trends come together. In this guest blog, he talks about inspiration, seasons ... all the way through to summer. Read on to discover more!

TL;DR

- He is actually always “switched on”, but finds peace and inspiration in small moments;
- Max is already working on Christmas during the summer;
- He travels the world for projects, but finds inspiration in his garden, colour, nature and small moments of wonder;
- According to Max, seasonal flowers remain the most interesting and inspiring;
- Colour plays an important role in Max’s creations.

Always switched on

For Max, inspiration is everywhere and always present. In architecture, fashion, art, nature and travel, but also in an unexpected colour combination or a special moment of light on an ordinary day. Projects follow one another at a rapid pace, especially in summer, and his work takes him to remarkable places all over the world.

At the same time, his mind is already busy with new concepts, colours and seasons. Because for Max, inspiration is not something you consciously plan, but a way of looking at the world.

“Inspiration is everywhere, as long as you remain open to it.”

What are Max’s small moments of happiness?

He does not have fixed days off. They usually arise spontaneously, whenever work allows. Although these moments of rest have become rarer, he finds small moments of relaxation during his travels.

When on location, Max always tries to take a moment to feel the atmosphere of a place, experience the culture and gain new inspiration. Moments like these give him energy. Just like his garden, where he finds peace in observing nature.

“I draw my energy from many small, valuable moments. My garden is a major source of peace and inspiration in that respect; observing nature, the changes of the seasons and the interplay of colours and structures continues to fascinate me.”

Thinking about Christmas already in summer

Through his work for a major player in the decoration industry, preparations for the festive season start well in advance. While others are still enjoying long sunny days, he is already working on winter atmospheres, new concepts, colour palettes and trends.

“For me, Christmas is actually present all year round.”

Sub 3 extra

According to Max, it is precisely this switching between seasons that makes his work special and creatively challenging.

Which summer trend should not be missed according to Max?

Max does not have to think long about this question: for him, seasonal flowers remain the most interesting and inspiring.

They carry the purity and energy of the moment within them, and that is exactly what makes arrangements lively and authentic. He also enjoys working with flowers and materials that bring movement: natural shapes that almost seem to dance and give a design airiness and dynamism.

Colour also plays an important role in his work. With carefully chosen colour combinations, Max not only translates trends, but also creates emotion and atmosphere.

“It is precisely the subtlety between shades, structures and shapes that makes a design exciting and contemporary.”
